IN EPISODE ONE

PORSCHE CAYMAN v BMW M3 - LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!

Porsche and BMW. They've been at each other for years - someone should tell them they're on the same side. But they're at it again. The new Porsche Cayman, designed to be the best 150k super car money can buy. And the BMW M3? No car has come close to its range of abilities and sheer excellence.

The Car Show hosts, David Morley and Dieter Kahsnitz, disagree on just about everything - David's decided the M3 is the best bang for the buck in its class. And Dieter, of course, reckons it's the Cayman.

After track tests, practicality tests and a lot of opinions on both cars from David and Dieter, both agree to disagree, so it's up to Glenn Ridge to take to the track and cast the deciding vote on the best buy.

FPV DRIFT CAR - CAN YOU TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW DRIFT?

Drifting is the latest craze that is taking the world by storm. In its simplest form, drifting is pretty much going as fast as you can sideways… and it certainly is an adrenalin pumping spectator sport.

The sport enjoys celebrity status in Japan and the US , where it attracts huge crowds with professional teams with big budgets, and fast cars with big horsepower. It's appeal has even made it to the big screen with UIP about to release “ Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Driftin cinemas worldwide next month.

In Australia , Ford offshoot FPV has built its own drift car based on a turbocharged Falcon. It now makes about 400kW and while Ford has traditionally concentrated on touring cars, the idea of a drift car is introducing a whole new generation of people to the blue oval badge.

Glenn Ridge gets behind the wheel of the Ford FPV Drift car with Professional Drifter Adam Newton, to see if you really can teach an old dog new drift.

THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN - THE MOVIE

There aren't many classic motorcycles which star in their own feature films. But then again, there aren't many classic motorcycles which can claim to be The World's Fastest Indian... This low budget movie, starring usually high budget actors, is a true life story about a New Zealand man's dream of making his 1920 Indian Twin Scout the fastest bike on earth.

Academy Award winner Sir Anthony Hopkins stars as Burt Munro, a man who never let anything stand in the way of his dream to be the fastest man on two wheels, a role Anthony told us is he's favourite to date.

In the 1960s, Munro took the Scout to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and, following repeated attempts, year after year, he finally set a new speed record and in doing so captured the spirit of his times. Burt Munro's 1967 world record remains unbroken.

The World's fastest Indian is playing now in cinemas across the country.

2006 PORSCHE MT. BULLER SPRINT

Australia Day 2006 was a day that many Victorians will never forget, most for all the wrong reasons. Bushfires ravaged many parts of the state and emergency services were working around the clock to get them under control.

And while their thoughts were with the fire-fighters, over 140 entrants had assembled at Mansfield in the Victorian High-country, and were preparing to fire up their engines and burn up the mountain, in a responsible way, in the 3 rd annual Porsche Mt Buller Sprint.

All the race results, highlights and information about the next event can be found on their website at www.mtbullersprint.com

YOKOHAMA HOTLAP

This segment proudly brought to you by YOKOHAMA . For information on Yokohama Performance tyres, log onto www.yokohama.com.au/

Is a Bathurst Monaro a better car then a Morris minor? Is a Bentley a more worthy ride than a Volkswagen beetle? Well there's only one way to find out. David Morley has put together a list of the most mixed matched cars you'll ever see in one place, and the idea is to put a different one through the hoops each week at Calder Park raceway. We'll take the car and its owner to see what kind of lap time they can produce…. Fastest lap takes home the silverware.

We've devised a handicapping system based on each cars time down a quarter mile. The slower the time down the quarter the bigger the handicap and as chief handicapper, Morley gets to throw in the odd wild card - or maybe two. So the first job is to set the baseline time.

Morley set a time at Calder Park Raceway of:
  • 52.00 for a flying lap on the short course
  • 14.53 for the ¼ mile.
Next week the fun starts, as well as the serious business, as the first of our hot lap contenders takes to the track at Calder Park, as we put car and driver to the test to see who will be the Yokohama hot lap champion.

If you'd like to try your skills in the Yokohama hotlap, email us at info@qmedia.com.au.

ON NEXT WEEK'S EPISODE OF THE CAR SHOW

We put two Toyota 's head to head to ask the old age question…. DO you really need a big, heavy, thirsty 4x4 when a smaller one will do? Or will it?

The new Suzuki Swift has cult written all over it. It's currently outselling its logical competitors by a mile. So what makes the new kid on the block so cool?

If you have any questions, comments or stories you'd like us to cover, drop us an email at info@qmedia.com.au

Don't forget to tune in on Saturday afternoons on Channel Nine for the cut-down 30min version of this episode of The Car Show.
